When I’m shopping at a store, there are a few things I know to skip over. Whether it’s a certain style, a certain cut, and sometimes even just fabric composition or color, I know it’s not for me. It helps when you’re shopping to be able to cut things out of your options swiftly. And I think everyone has a list (or at least you should) in your head of things that your closet and personal style, just don’t need.
I recently saw this creator share 55 things she’s not buying and it made me think about that mental list I have. I found her list so interesting because everyone is so different. She hates sleeveless things, I love them and never thought to think about how my arms look in them. We both don’t need skinny jeans, pass. So here is my list of things I’m not buying.
Things I’m Not Buying
Overalls. I just know this isn’t a look for me. I love it on other people and think they can be so cute, but I feel so off in them.
Dolman Sleeve Anything. I hate a dolman sleeve. The second I put it on it feels so wrong.
Black Wool Coat. This is a newer revelation since getting my colors done and living a few winters in NYC. I realized a black coat makes me a little depressed when I put it on. And it also washes me out when I no longer have a tan in the dead of winter. I tried on a black wool coat this winter and I couldn’t rip it off my body fast enough. Give me brown, navy, greens and grey (which is a stretch but this one is basically my replacement for a black coat).
Puff Sleeve Tops. The way I WANT a puff sleeve top (like hello this is so cute!) but the second I put it on, I feel insane. Maybe I just haven’t found the right one, or maybe it’s just not for me.
Drop Shoulders. Similar to a dolman sleeve, I just can’t with a drop shoulder. Every so often a sweater in a high quality fabric with a drop shoulder can work, but I usually avoid it.
Ballet flats. I think I’ve learned this year that ballet flats are not for me. And instead, I prefer the Mary Jane look. It adds something to the shoe that makes it feel a little cooler than a sweet ballet flat.
Thongs. I literally don’t want this in my life ever again. If I need no panty lines, I’d rather just go commando. Or wear my lazy Spanx. I can’t believe I used to wear these DAILY in my high school and college life.
Cubicle beige trousers. I bought these a few years ago when they were trending and while I love all the outfits I made with them, ask me how many times I ever reached for them? I remember packing them for my month in Paris. I wore them once, saw myself in a video of them I took, then swore I’d never wear them again. Instead, I like these trousers, these Aritzia ones and these from M.M.LaFleur. Between the beige cubicle color and the pleats, it’s a hard no. I think I’m set on trousers altogether since I have my 3 that work and it’s not something I reach for often.
Sweater dresses. I think I’m done with this hunt. Every fall and winter I think I need them. I shop, I see nothing. I love a knit dress like this. But a true sweater dress, hard pass. Won’t be wasting my time shopping for those ever again
Black tennis shoes. Back to my anti-black clothing feelings, I feel that way about tennis shoes, too. I have a pair of black Converse that I thought I’d live in like my white ones, but sadly, no. They got donated very quickly.
Cobalt blue, teal or Kelly green, anything. I really can’t think of a time that any of these three colors entered my closet and I liked it. Okay there was this one cobalt blue coat that I no longer own, but other than that, nothing.
Major logos on anything. I am very anti-logo and don’t want anything on my bags or clothes.
Chanel anything. Need to write a longer post on why I’m so anti high-end designer, but I don’t ever see Chanel being a part of my closet. Even if you gave it to me, I would never wear it.
Most wool. I am so insanely sensitive to wool and have found the only brand I can wear is M.M.LaFleur. I am reaching for cotton sweaters, or sadly, acrylic/polyester blends. Even the slightest amount of wool in some brands will destroy my skin.
Adidas. Okay this is a temporary pause. But I think I am all set on the Adidas front. I have more than I care to admit and can’t imagine there being a colorway I need. The only color I would like in my closet is a true chocolate brown suede, but I can also find that at another retailer. I regret not buying a pair of Onitsuka Tiger ones in Paris when I saw them in person.
Skinny jeans. I think I’m good on ever wearing these again. And I have my one pair of dark wash and black skinnies to wear with boots if I need to. Otherwise, no need to buy these again for a while.
Polyester summer pieces. I am a fabric snob, as we all should be. Polyester does not belong in summer clothing. Period. And I most definitely won’t be spending a pretty penny on anything that is 100% polyester. If it’s expensive, it better be made of quality fabric.
Grey t-shirts. Another color I learned does not work for me is most variations of grey. I don’t think I ever need a grey t-shirt. I’ll stick to whites. I remember doing a closet clean-out and I had several items that I knew I just never wore. The easiest pieces to donate.
Super barrel leg jeans. I have a slight barrel jean that really just feels like a straight leg, and other than that, I’m good. I just don’t get the hype of this trend and don’t think it’s for me.
Super distressed jeans. I think this can live in my past forever. I don’t foresee this becoming trending anytime soon either.
Super tiny sunglasses. It’s a no for me, and maybe that’s the 2013 blogger in me who will always appreciate an oversized pair. This is about as small as I’d go.
Shein. Sorry. I just can’t. Add Temu to the list, too.
Chandelier earrings. Most statement earrings are a no for me.
Longchamp nylon tote. Absolutely not. I don’t care how much this can hold without falling apart, that doesn’t make it a fashion bag. It makes it a grocery bag. I think it’s hideous, I think it’s overpriced. And for everyone who always tells me “it looks just as good 15 years later”, absolutely not. You have Longhcamp bag blindness. I have seen a well worn Longchamp up close and it looks cheap and sad and like she’s been through it. Now, Longhcamp leather bag? Maybe. This is really cute.
Peasant dresses or tops. They are hideous to me. Period.
The Gucci belt. Remember everyone having that belt? I never understood it.
Uncomfortable shoes. I am done with sacrificing my feet for a beautiful shoe. I will still have my nicer heels for nicer looks. But that is with the understanding that it’s mostly a sitting shoe. If a shoe is meant to be walked in all day, and it isn’t comfortable, toss.
Wool coats. I think it’s fair to say I can pause on buying any new long wool coats for winter. I have every color I could ever want, and every weight. From super heavy to super light. The only one I would consider replacing is my camel one from Mango. Only because it’s not super warm and after buying my Ganni coat, it now makes every coat feel cheap as can be.
Boatneck tops. Anything that requires me to have to think about my bra straps I don’t want to deal with. Unless it is a top that can be worn braless with ease (as someone with implants, this is an easy scenario for me a lot of the time) I will not mess with hiding straps or wearing anything strapless. For me, some tops are easier than others to go braless. But if it’s not something I can easily do, goodbye. Not buying it. If I have to wear a strapless bra to make a top work over going braless, not happening. I already hate wearing real bras, so don’t even come at me with a strapless one.
There you have it, my ultimate list of things I just will not be buying ever again. Do you have things you’ll never buy?
